About this deal

This perennial holds its foliage until the last moment, to ensure brightness is bought to gardens, even in autumn, while flowers are produced from May through to July. This variety is coveted for its exceptional fragrance. It is also prized for its white, single flowers with yellow stamens that grow in clusters of three or five. It is a more compact variety reaching 1.5 metres (5 feet) and it doesn’t mind being pruned, so can be useful for a smaller space. It will also do well in a large container. Philadelphus ‘Manteau d’Hermine’ If your plant becomes affected with powdery mildew you will see white, powdery-looking patches of the fungus spreading across the leaves. This disease can lead to stunted and distorted leaves affecting the plant’s ability to photosynthesize. You should remove affected growth immediately. While aphids are unlikely to kill your plant, they can make photosynthesis more difficult because of the damage to leaves, this can gradually weaken the plant. Of course, they make a great addition to a white garden, but they also look good with blue flowering shrubs such as Ceanothus. In fact, their white blossoms go well with most colour combinations from cool blues and violets to hot reds and yellows. Pruning Advice

These shrubs can grow in most soils from heavy clay to light, sandy soils or chalk. They are happy in acid or alkaline soil and they can also tolerate salt. They have a very deep root system and so are unaffected by dry weather. They will, however, need to be kept watered for their first year until the roots are well established. Fertiliser Requirements Most are deciduous and all blossom profusely in mid to late summer. They range in size from dwarf varieties to giants, so there is a type to fit all garden sizes. Some are also suitable for planting in containers. Philadelphus ‘Avalanche’The spring foliage of the Philadelphus Coronarius Aureus emerges a bright yellow and then fades to a chartreuse green when mature. During the early summer months, it offers up a display of abundant white flowers that many says have a slight lemon fragrance. It grows to a height to 1 ½ metres but can be pruned to a smaller size. The Philadelphus Coronarius Aureus grows well in partial shade which makes the hardy shrub an excellent choice for a woodland garden. It grows well in areas up to a zone H-6 hardiness. Its toughness makes it well suited to coastal regions. Philadelphus Belle Etoile Suttons strives to ensure that all its plants are delivered to you in the perfect condition for planting. While the majority of our nursery plants cope well with slight delays in intransit, sadly, the time it takes to deliver to certain locations in the UK means that we can't guarantee this for some of our smaller plug products and tender bedding and vegetable lines, which do not respond well to the extra journey time. So regretfully while we offer the majority of our live plant offering nationwide, we are unable to ship plugs, begging plants and tender vegetable plants to the following areas: HS, IV41-IV49, IV51, IV55-56, KW15-KW17, PA34, PA41-48, PA60-PA78, PA80, PH40-PH44, TR21-TR24, ZE1-ZE3.

Propagation for Philadelphus 'Little White Love' is best done through softwood or semi-ripe cuttings taken in summer. Take cuttings that are around 5-8 inches long and make sure to remove any flower buds. Use a well-draining potting mix and make sure to keep the cuttings moist but not waterlogged. Once rooted, the Philadelphus 'Little White Love' can be transplanted into its permanent home. Growth Speed Fill your garden with a delightful fragrance from this deciduous shrub which boasts large, double white flowers. Medium-height Philadelphus, for example P. ‘Belle Etoile’, which grows to around 1.5m (5ft), are ideal for planting behind other summer-flowering shrubs such as roses, or growing among tall perennial plants

As far as flower differences go, some are double or have coloured centres, but generally, the overwhelming impression is of a profusion of white blooms. Choose one that appeals most. Thankfully the spectacle does not stop there - as the blooms finish, they shed their petals like a snowstorm, carpeting the ground with their discarded beauty. Discussing fertilizer, this plant does best with a moderate application of fertilizer in the spring. I prefer a balanced fertilizer such as 10-10-10. A little fertilizer goes a long way with this plant, so be careful not to overdo it. Too much fertilizer will result in lots of green growth with fewer flowers. About light This beautiful variety produces large single flowers that are white with orange-tinged petals and a hint of lilac around the stamens. It is a hardy shrub with an upright habit and graceful arching branches. As with most varieties, it will tolerate almost all conditions and grows to a height of approximately 1.5 metres (5 feet). However, its spread can be as much as 2.5 metres (8 feet). Philadelphus ‘Coronarius’

Philadelphus coronarius'Aureus' – the foliage of this philadelphus is a limey-golden green when young, giving it an added zing. Flowers are white and scented. Needs shelter from strong sun. H x S: 2m x 2.5m

Plant bare-root plants in the dormant season (winter), when the ground is not frozen or waterlogged. Alternatively, pot up into a container to grow on Philadelphus ‘Lemoinei’ – an unusual variety with pale green leaves and white flowers that have a yellow centre. H x S: 1.5m x 1.5m It is an ideal plant for a large container on your patio, but make sure you position it near your house so that the gorgeous scent can drift into your home and be enjoyed indoors too. This Philadelphus also offers huge versatility working well in both a formal planting scheme and cottage style garden. Philadelphus are extremely easy to grow and are tolerant of most conditions. Planting and maintaining one of these shrubs is simplicity itself. Pay attention to pruning times to get the most abundant summer blooms. Light Requirements From spring to early summer, large, soft-green leaves cover the upright stems, making the perfect foil for other, more colourful flowers. Then, from May onwards, the 'Little White Love' buds burst into huge clusters of beautiful snowy-white double blooms, smothering the tree from top to toe and releasing its delectable scent.

Consider using this variety as a feature on a patio or balcony, by planting in a pot and swaying the delightful scent throughout your seating area. So, like the other Philadelphus varieties, ‘Little White Love’ has a sun light requirement of 6 hours of sun per day. However, this shrub is more tolerant of partial sun and shade than other varieties. It will still flower best in full sun. Ideal Temperature The petite Philadelphus Manteau d’Hermine is a dwarf and only grows to a height of 60 to 80 centimeters with a spreading habit of 1 to 1.5 metres. However, don’t let the shrub’s diminutive size fool you because it produces an abundance of double blossoms. Its compact form rarely requires pruning to stay neat and tidy. The virtually carefree shrub grows throughout Britain and Ireland. It even thrives in coastal regions. It was awarded the esteemed Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society. Philadelphus VirginalEncouraging the natural predators of aphids such as ladybirds, hoverfly larvae, lacewing larvae and parasitic wasps can help to keep them at bay, however often an infestation can build up before these insects are around in high numbers. This dwarf variety reaches a height of only 80 cm (31 inches) making it ideal for the smaller garden or for growing in a container. It produces an abundance of double creamy-white flowers and can tolerate most conditions including coastal situations. This shrub stays compact and neat and will rarely need any pruning.
